Salzburg Taler
« on: March 19, 2011, 06:56:58 PM »
Received this new Salzburg Taler which is relatively hard to find. Lower mintage era, and expecially tougher in higher grades. While the strike is not optimal, I love the colors on this piece. Note the Salt Box in St. Rupert's hands - Salzburg (Salz meaning "Salt") was named due to the broad salt mining industry in its region. This is symbolized across many coins and designs referencing the Bishopric state.

One of my most studied places. Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The name of Salzburg (Såizburg) means Salt Castle. Salz means salt and burg means fortress or walled town. It has had quite some history through the centuries.

Salzburg is home to one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, know as Hohensalzburg Castle.

Another great pick up  :ThumbsUp;
