Financing a Revolution
« on: December 30, 2013, 05:57:35 PM »
The Hungarian patriot Louis Kossuth came to the United States to find financial support for his revolution. These banknotes were printed here for him.  The notes are in Hungarian.  The fabric is exactly the same as other "wildcat" banks of the Jacksonian Eria.  This was printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Cassiler, & Co., Philadelphia.  Nominally one forint (about a Swiss franc or US 20 cents), these sold for one dollar to raise money for the revolution.  They are signed at the lower right, Kossuth Lajos. (Hungarians put the family name first.)
