New 1870 Newfoundland Half Dollar XF45 PCGS
« on: May 26, 2013, 07:49:08 AM »
I bought this last fall but just got it out of the SDB and took some photos recently. I really like the Newfoundland coins and find that they are quite underrated compared to the Canadian series. There are many attractive issues with quite low mintages. For example, the silver five cent piece (they made silver decimal half dimes until 1947! Unlike Canada which switched famously to nickel five cent pieces in 1922) dated 1946-C was struck to the tune of only 2,041 pieces! Anybody got a nice one? Another example, my 1880 Newfoundland gold two dollar was struck to the extent of 2,500 coins.

In the case of this 1870 Newfoundland half dollar, it was the first-year issue since the half dollar was the last denomination to be introduced bearing the Victoria design. Only 50,000 pieces were struck. This Choice XF PCGS-graded example has just the look I like, nice original surfaces and accurately graded, in my opinion. Enjoy!

Wow, I had no idea these had such low mintages. A fair amount of World coins have low mintages and
are not fully appreciated as such. I would imagine that this may change as time marches on.  :ThumbsUp;
