Yesterday Stefanie mentioned that she had an interest in merchant tokens. Attached find a February 1981 Numismatist article on Hard times Tokens, covering both political and merchant tokens written by Thomas Schweich. The article discusses theories as to why they were issued, including the motivations of the merchants who issued them. If you want to know everything there is to know about these tokens, this article is useful.

I removed the attached article. I apologize for violating a copyright. A copy of the Thomas Schweich article can be obtained from the ANA library

Interesting piece. The ANA will send you a photocopy of any article for a modest fee. I often use the Library for that when I am researching. The way to find an article is to use their Harry Bass Periodical Database (also an ANA link).
Best wishes, Mike M.

I understand your point. Unfortunately I did not realize this when I uploaded the file. I tried to remove it, but I'm not sure I was successful. Can someone help me to remove the Thomas Schweich article?
