I have been asked by a number of members of the other Coin Forum

not to ever again mention the collection and I have agreed. So, I guess

that folks will just have to come over here to learn about developments.



As some of you know, I have decided to have all of my coins not only PCGS,

but CAC approved. While neither company is immune to errors in grading,

the two together, generally will indicate a quality coin that is strong for the grade.

a number of coins are cracked out from say a MS-65, where it is a really nice

top of the line for the grade coin. The coin is then dipped and gets a just barely

made it MS-66 grade. It is still a nice looking coin but the luster is a little less due to

 dipping and it is no longer strong for the date. I have found, when

one realizes a mistake on a coin or one chooses to change direction for a collection, i

it is best, at least for me, to get it over with and then move on. Even if CAC

 is no longer in business when the collection is sold in 10 -20 years,it should still have

 the cache of the current doily and rattler slabs as perceived quality. In the

case of CAC, it is not only perceived but will exist in actuality.

Thus a number of collection coins, CAC as well non CAC will be auctioned off. Some

 of the CAC coins will turn a small profit and so the overall loss will not be too bad.


I have decided that there were too many white coins in the collection and I wanted to

have more coins with pleasing toning in the collection. Who really knows what will

 be in demand in 10 - 20 years, but a little bit of everything can't be

a bad thing at all.


I have decided to add some dimes to the collection. These will all be toned coins and one is the

plate coin for the PCGS Coin Facts under 1891 S.L. Dimes Proof. I call this dime, because of its toning

"FIRE AND ICE).

That's too bad bear. Many people over there enjoyed your experience and were actually learning about
putting together an investment collection. Which at best is very difficult and sometimes costly task.
It is an extremely difficult task to achieve and with your health situation I would imagine makes it even more difficult.

I stayed out of almost all discussions over there on purpose because I felt it better and safer that I keep my comments here
so it doesn't get misinterpreted as trying to promote this site.

Bear - you "owe" no one an explanation.  I hope that your collection, with whatever turnover you feel is necessary, brings you happiness and pride while also bringing your heirs a future reward.

I am giving serious consideration to moving into beautifully toned dimes. Yes its true,

I am planning on modifying my criteria for the Legacy collection to include dimes. One

never knows what twists and turns will develop in a fast moving and eclectic collection

such as mine.  Is  it even possible, to include, gasp, dare I say it, toned Franklin halves?

I'm glad to hear that you are thinking of including dimes in your collection-- there are many beautifully toned coins among the seated, barber, and mercury series--  they may be small but, hey that is what digital imaging is for!

1956 Franklin PCGS MS66 FL......woa!!!!!

I saw a pair of Franklins with just that (endroll) look on CU not too long ago. What bothers me is that I have also seen several Morgans with exactly that look during the last several years. Before this time, I never saw Morgans (and I have toners) that looked like this.
