What say you :3dancingsmiley;
Larry had a great idea to have a coin made for Coins Are Fun
Or maybe just a regular token.
I think this calls for a design contest........ ;D
Rules: for now, I may add a few more
Must have CoinsAreFun prominent somewhere on the obverse of the design.
Optional "A Numismatic Wonderland" that is our front page logo http://www.coinsarefun.com/ (http://www.coinsarefun.com/) :)
MUST BE A MEMBER
You can submit as many times as you like.
Members have to vote and decide the winner.
All entries must be in by October 18th. 3pm West Coast time.
The winner will receive a $150 cash prize
-
This will require some thought, but is a super idea! :ThumbsUp;
What are the options? Counterstamps, all-out tokens or silver rounds designed with the site logo or name, any other options or ideas?
-
I think it should be something about our site.
As far as design goes I think it's wide open
I have to look into the cost of having them made.
And as far as the contest goes you should be a member
here and each design should be voted on by our members.
And I will give a money prize ;)

I did a quick search and there are places that will produce these, Silvertowne being one. I'll have to do a little more digging...

Yes, please let me know :ThumbsUp;

Love the idea!!!! :1Applause;
This would be really :signcool;

I was messing around with the idea this afternoon, and came up with this (very) rough idea.
Here's an old territorial gold design that I modified, and added a token reverse design to advertise. Of course the text can easily be changed or modified. Don't be too critical, it's my first attempt at this. ;)
(http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc184/Sallythedog/Coinsarefun1-Copy2.jpg)
Of course it would be awesome in gold, but a nice big dollar-sized silver planchet would be cool, too. :)

I'm likin' it ;D Do as many different ones as you like.
I have to say I really like the obverse Happy(*) we can always do them in brass, so it has that gold look.
But we may need to re work the good for 1 great time at CAF to something else otherwise
the boardmembers may be expecting something else from CAF >:D :D

Ooh, that is a great idea, Rok. I always loved the schoolgirl design!
Here's a old sceatta design if you wanted to hammer out a few in your garage ;)

Thx Larry,
I just love your last one - sceatta design - we could use this one for CRF (gold) fractional 1/4 dollars - and actually hammer some ^-^

Sounds like a really neat idea. I'm in favor of it. :signcool;
I think one side should have a picture of Larry, wearing Uncle Sam's hat, pointing his finger....with legend "We want you.....to join us at CoinsAreFun.com" LOL!

Hahahahaha, that's awesome! Don't have any good idea for the reverse at the moment.
-
How about something simple for the reverse, like an eagle -

Ok, I'm a landscaper, not a graphic designer! :D These are just rough drafts of course, ideas that I stuck together just to see what they'd look like.

That's how ALL artists start out, with a rough draft. And i do landscape design along with architecture so you can't tell me that Landscapers aren't artistic.
Well.............at lrast the good ones are artistic and very creative :ThumbsUp;

What a fun way to spend an afternoon! :)
How about this, picture it on a big 40mm+ silver planchet-

Ooooo, your peeking my interest on this one. I really like this one Happy(*)
We also need to keep in mind that I will be handing these out at the coin shows.
So we might have to make them in a less expensive material.
With a few in silver for those who want to buy it as bullion
But everyone will get a free one made from the inexpensive material :)

Actually, a large size may be an issue to produce, I'd have to check on the limitations offered by the medal producers. I'd still love to see that one in silver though, nicely toned after many years of storage, maybe stored in one of those velvet Canadian dollar holders.

The ship is very sharp. Like the wreath reverse too!

Those are all good ideas for brainstorming. The final work has to be something that reflects the essence of the Board and the present Group of posters. (We know so little about the Viewers.) If you look at the homepage, you see the baroque or rococco, in "Fun." Also, if you delve into the linked images and their links, you discover a treasury of information. To me, this is not one of those boards where you put up a picture and five people reply, "Cool!" and we go on the next one. It is the difference between Bach or Scarlotti and an Irish jig or "Row row row your boat." The folksie things can be a lot of fun and involve some teamwork. But there is no "stuff" nothing below the surface. With "Coins are Fun" the fun is real because there is very much below the surface.
At least, that's how I see the Board.
Has anyone read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand? Every creation reflects the integrity of the artist. The solution to an artistic problem does not borrow pieces from other works, any more than a person borrows pieces of someone else's body -- or soul.
Brainstorming is a process. It starts with ideas like these, where you take what is known and given, but through a proceess of association and then free association and then creation, you come up with the new, the original, the essential statement.
-
I agree. As most people here already know, I collect jetons almost exclusively now. Jetons represent tan early progression of what we are attmpting here, tokens designed to commemorate an event or group. The artistic stylings of the 17-1800's jetons are often simple yet beautiful to me.
Notice on modern coinage, all of the lettering and "clutter" that has been deemed necessary by committee. This is what I dislike about modern coinage. In my attempts at a design, I would love to capture (in a few words) the heart of this group. To me it's the friendly atmosphere and lack of scrutiny. We all have very different styles, but still have interest and support for other members and their collections. I have a love for simplstic yet beautiful designs, and hope to eventually convey that in a design.
I did a Google search for "coin club token", just to see what others have done. There are far too many that appear as modern coinage or Chuck E cheese style tokens. I think we should pursue a more classiic styling, and do "our own thing". This is a really fun little project, and I hope we can get much more input from the rest of the gang. Let's see what others are thinking. My attempts are just rooted in my own interests and experience, so I can imagine that others will come up with completely different ideas.
-
I am new to coin collecting. I did a quick search for token design and found the following site: http://www.hoffmanmint.com/designcoin.pdf (http://www.hoffmanmint.com/designcoin.pdf)
I truely don't know how useful the link will be for the rest of the members since this site seems to have extremely knowlegble members that most likely not need it. This is truly going to be a great learning experience for me by researching past token.

I saw that site, too. I wish they supplied a few clipart pics with that, but it's a good starting point. You can easily add text from the ms paint program, and search Google images for whatever clipart or pictures you want to use for ideas. There really are tons of possibilities. Research of what others have used for their token design can be helpful, too.

Welcome to coinsarefun, lanmanaz
All of the designs so far are interesting.
Maybe filthybroke will end up in a 12-way tie with filthybroke. :D
I'll try to find some inspiration this week. : )

Sorry if I'm posting too many entries, but for some reason this project just clicked for me. I have been enjoying this, and I think growing a little in my "artistic abilities". I even looked up the techniques of minting and availability of medal pressing machines. Anyone familiar at all in the area of medal presses and minting? What a neat project that would be!
Can't wait to see some more entries!

This is not original art. I am not an artist. It does, however, speak to what I see in this group.

This was imaged by Goodman
What about using something like this one.
The obverse is such great irony :)
"A Real Antique, But Alas It Is Indecipherable"
Something can be changed on the reverse and possible the obverse legend?......................Just an idea
Don't take it like this is what I want to see, remember everyone has to vote on it

Ohhhh boy Larry, you used one of my most favorite Lions from the Conder series :Beatingheart; :Beatingheart; :Beatingheart;
-
Nice ones! I love the graphics on Deagle's, especially eagle on the reverse. I haven't yet figured out how to bend the text either, but that would be quite useful on this project.
Larry, that's a sweet look! Proof gold would be the way to go on that one.
I thought about a straight-forward coin theme, whether it be numismatics or minting, but it took a while to figure out a theme. On this one, I went with the early hammering process on the obverse, and a familiar coin design cut and placed on the reverse. Still not sure it's what I was looking for, but it can be modified.
(http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc184/Sallythedog/fromhumblebeginnings.jpg)
BTW, my earlier posts of jeton designs are actually not existing jeton designs, but pieced from many different sources. I used an actual wreath from an older jeton for the reverses, but the obverses were pieced from photos and clips from other sources, and then made to look like they were from one source. On the design for the hammered piece I did use an actual existing obverse but relettered the reverse. I just love that design!
That's about the extent of my abilities right now, but we can certainly work with the designs to make them better-suited for our purposes if necessary.
-
Now this would need a bit of work to reset the type. I modified a bit-mapped version of my earlier design
just to show Stef's image, and in copper. The text is a bit muddy, but there's an easy solution, if needed.
Since this example seems to have heavy shoulders, perhaps it doesn't need any rims;
perhaps it could resemble the cartwheel one penny and two penny British coins of 1797.
If so, perhaps the medal could have incuse lettering in the heavy shoulders near the edge. : )
This is conceptual artwork, a draft. It could easily be mated with another design, like the Slough Lion.
Text is flexible and easily revised. I don't believe I could do this without Photoshop.
(http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g254/Larrymo123/after%208-9-09/coinsarefunOBVERSE600a.png)
-
Here's another iteration to resemble incuse lettering.
(http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g254/Larrymo123/after%208-9-09/coinsarefunnewcopper.png)
-
Dang, I gotta get a copy of Photoshop! I'm using a combo of freeware, mspaint and Photoscape. Works well, but it looks like I'm missing a few options by not using Photoshop.
I think the cartwheel is a neat idea, I've always liked that design. Incuse lettering would be cool.
-
My second idea - I have problems bending text -so if coined this should be sorted out.
(http://www.shrani.si/f/3n/Je/1nb7hhtY/crf-token-idea1.jpg)
This one has some great possibilities. I like the design. Is it from a paper note design?
Maybe we should look at old notes to get ideas or the simple but beautiful ASE or Walking Liberty Designs :HMMMMM;
-
I've searched some coin club tokens before we started this, and I thought we were well past the quality and design level of most of what I'd seen.

I asked a very prominent person over ATS regarding this issue, he read through the thread and replied.
"Stefanie,
My opinion is that you can put any design, from any non-copyright source on your tokens. The only thing you can't do is combine "United States of America" and a statemet of dollar value - that would make it appear to be a legal tender coin.
All the "good for" trade tokens are legal, etc. becuse they don't claim to be real money.
Hope this helps."
I honestly think we should continue to have fun with this coin design and put to be the worries and concerns that has been brought up.
After all the site is name Coins Are Fun. Lets not take this and make it a situation, These are advertising tokens nothing more, nothing less.
I say lets have fun with the designs :)
Uhhhhh man....... I was just getting started.....LOL
I made this one but I guess it is not allowed?
(http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/rr193/tonedcoin_maniac/coin2.jpg)
You know..... It really sucks when someone kills the fun. I think I will try once more but someone needs to take a chill.
BTW Stef, this design came from part of your coins.
I like it and its a contender Happy(*) Happy(*) it will be voted on
but you need to remove the "One Dollar" and "United States of America"
Put the date 2010 and you have a great submission ;)
-
<<I say lets have fun with the designs>>
Agreed. :)
We already have tokens that reflect modern coinage, club tokens, jetons, medieval hammered, classic medals, or some combination of these designs. Nice work, guys!
Any more design suggestions?

I like the obverse alot - you can try with UNITED STATES OF COINSAREFUN // ONE GREAT FUN (instead of DOLLAR)
Keep trying :ThumbsUp;

I like how you did the lettering on the conder. Was it difficult?
Very difficult. This was actually my first time trying anything like it so it took me a couple of hours, seriously! a couple of hours. Good thing I didn't have training today, no kids and no garden work :D
I'll try to make a couple more tomorrow and play with GIMP to see what I come up with now. Maybe some of Stef's toners with weird lettering. I don't know, we'll see what my head thinks of making.
BTW, thanks and I'm glad you liked it.

I bet it took some time! I'm going through the same ordeal, working with this editing software. Pretty cool, though. Looking forward to seeing more! :ThumbsUp;

Oh, and here's a special one (for me). It's a design that I've looked for but haven't come across again since the first one I saw and missed out on. I made this one just to show, really. I just love the port scene, and of course the ship!
The obverse is basically intact and almost as minted, minus the lettering and a couple of adjustments for sizing. The Reverse is just something I threw together to try to match the style.
(http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc184/Sallythedog/Jetondesign3.jpg)

Some nice designs here :3dancingsmiley; I really like the ship port scene Filthy Broke, I guess i'll put my pencil and paper down now :Funny;

Rigos - nice work - I use gimp myself - PLEEEEEEEASE would you be so nice and share what function did you use to make that lettering. Or did you crop and turn every letter separately as a new layer.
Thanx, Rok

Love your last design FilthyBroke - looks so really medieval :)
-
Love your last design FilthyBroke - looks so really medieval :)
Thanks, I had to look it up again, but the obverse is a Roettiers design from the mid 1700's. It is one of the best shipping scenes that I've seen on a coin or medal. I only ever saw one of these for sale, but I'm on the lookout if it ever comes back up for sale. :)
-
So far we have some great looking designs.......who else wants to try?
-
I'm nearly finished with my design, just need to put the text, and scan and upload.:)
-
Same here, just have very little time and it has taken me 3 hours just to do another design (more like edit one of Stef's coin). Plus, I gotta start working on the new house we just bought.

Still lots of time, guys. I think she said that it'll run through the 18th of October. Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. :)

Looks good to me, a very nice design.
Maybe one small suggestion, if you don't mind :)
It may help on the obverse were you have written Coins Are Fun. Instead of a downward angle you can spread them from wing tip
too wing tip. Just like a legend of the coin. The rest looks great
-
Some great offerings, already. Here is my design. It's a simple rendering, hopefully not too amateuish. The Reverse eagle's image was taken from a drawing by Mario Perez. Thanks for the chance.--Jim

Everyones designs look great.
There are only 10 more days left to submit your designs, remember the contest ends October 18th.

Wow there are some really creative people here! So far though...being a ship coin/token collector the masted ship theme really appeals to me, but thats just me :)
-
I wonder if there should be a seperate gallery for these entries, so we can view all entries and compare? Lots of great ideas here, can't wait to see how this turns out. :)
Oh, and I actually sat down to draw (or sketch) a design this weekend, but wouldn't you know it, I got sidetracked by several football games. ;D I may still get a little time to do another design, I really wanted to try to draw one rather than using the computer. I haven't gotten a chance to get the sketch pad out in years.

I thought that when the end of the contest comes to place them on a new thread with the name of the designer and number them
so we can have a clear view of all the designs. Then we can vote.
btw, glad to see you back posting.......I thought you forgot about us or your football came first :( :LOL;

Here are a couple of ideas in draft form. I guess they'll pass for brass, at least with an engraver.
(http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g254/Larrymo123/after%208-9-09/BRASSDRAFTSSQUARE1024.jpg)
I have some thoughts on the cartwheel version...
• The medal should be struck in collar, if possible.
• If not in collar, we'll have some really unique pieces.
• Lettering on cartwheel version could be in a serif font. : )
• If we can get incuse lettering, I think the cartwheel version would be great;
in fact, it would be a medal like nobody else has, except King George III. LOL
I have some thoughts on the version with raised lettering and rims...
Lion and man are resizable so can be made smaller or larger.
• I thought about making lion smaller and giving him a flagstaff with a COINSAREFUN pennant/battle flag.
• Rims on this version could be squared off, like flat rims on some Conders. They would not have to be perfect.
• Raised lettering can be in a font convenient to the engraver; it's not critical which font at this point.
-
Love the cartwheel idea with incuse lettering. That design would definitely make for a stunning medal, Larry!

I'm glad you like the cartwheel design. : )
This looks more like brass I think. The RGB values are 227,216,103. : )
Also, I made the man a bit smaller to balance with size of the lion.
(http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g254/Larrymo123/after%208-9-09/BrassiestVersionofcoinsarefundrafts1024.png)
NOTE: I think these might sell like hotcakes, on ebay or elsewhere. Plus, they would be great advertisements for the Coins Are Fun website.
I've also considered a medal as thick as the two pence cartwheel. Of course, it would be subject to rim bruising if dropped on any hard surface.

sorry if the picture is to big?
Looks good to me, a very nice design.
Maybe one small suggestion, if you don't mind :)
It may help on the obverse were you have written Coins Are Fun. Instead of a downward angle you can spread them from wing tip
too wing tip. Just like a legend of the coin. The rest looks great

There are a lot of different styles here and some great ideas. It's going to be tough to choose. Best of luck to everyone! :)

Hey Larry, where did your last one go? That was a really cool one!

Hmmm, it does look like it's missing in action, and I didn't do anything this time :)
Maybe he is fine tuning it?

I'll include a revised version below,
which shows the eagle larger and he extends to the margin of the center,
covering up the bottom stripes of the flag.. : )

Great. Me, too. : )
The eagle design was something to do with my son's photo.

Ok everyone, the time for entries has ended.
I have a serious situation. My Mother has had heart surgery and
has not waken up yet. It is a very serious situation and I will probably not be
Able to organize the images so everyone can vote.
It may be a week or so, I will keep everyone posted
