Title: Conder Token, Middlesex DH 860, Shepherd/Stag
Post by: Larry on November 12, 2009, 05:24:38 AM

This is Middlesex 860, a halfpenny Conder Token from dies engraved by Thomas Spence.

He was obviously a great artisan.

I really enjoy this token.  : )

Larry,
Very nice coin you've got there.

What's the inscription on the edge?

Aidan.

Nice piece Larry.  A great photograph too!
One note on the description...Spence himself was not known to be a die sinker, only a manufacturer/issuer of tokens.  Most of his dies (if not all) were cut by James or Jacobs, both of London.

That is one fine piece of art.

Another one added to the want list.
Title: This token has a plain edge.

Thanks for the information about its possible designer/engraver, Conderluva.  I've revised the text in the image below.

This token has a plain edge, Aidan.  : )

I try to mention the edge inscription when a token has raised or incuse lettering and/or design.

I forgot to mention it.  Thanks.  : )

Larry,
I saw one example of Thomas Spence's extremely political 1/2d.s over here in New Zealand, which I tried to buy.

Despite its anti-monarchist theme,I would have still bought it just for the historical interest, even though I am from a very fiercely Royalist family myself.

Here's a fairly new acquisition. Buck 7c in 'as fine as they come' condition. I'm very satisfied with this one.

Stefanie,
The reverse of that one reminds me of the reverse design of some of the American Civil War 1c. currency tokens.

I presume that the obverse depicts King George III.

I agree it is reminiscent of one of the CWT's.  :)

The date on this piece is misleading...on the obverse is William III.

Thanks for the compliments on the avatar Stephanie!
I thought it came out looking rather donny darko, lol.

You are right about the obverse depicting King William III of England/II of Scotland.

The style looks like a 'Cartwheel' coin from King George III's reign.
