Title: 1883 5 Francs, Lugano
Post by: RHM22 on December 31, 2009, 02:53:27 PM
Here's the newest addition to my collection. It's also the centerpiece of my Swiss coins! Sorry about the poor pictures.

The pic is good. Also, very nice shooter you got there.

Thanks, regandon. There are pictures on the NGC website, but it says I can't use them because they're copyrighted.

Thought you disliked slabs?  :)
Nice pickup.

No doubt. I don't like toning either, but you can bet that I'm not going to go dipping a naturally toned coin. I certainly wouldn't slab a coin myself, unless the authenticity was in question.

I like the coin and toning, its a nice example of rim toning :)

I see these posts of Swiss shooters and wonder how it is, in all the time I have collected, that I haven't added nary an example to me hoards.

Actually, they're hard to find. Whenever one comes up for sale at a reasonable price, it gets snapped up. Even the common ones (Lucerene and 1934 Fribourg) are not easy to find in nice condition for a good price. If you ever were to add one to your hoards (which you should!), you'd have to be vigilant to find a nice one, especially a 19th century one. They abound in XF-AU, but apparently not many collectors or Schützenkönig of the 19th were very particular with their coins.

I have occasioned across a couple of attractive gold examples, gold really is a very seksay medal and would be a nice intro into Swiss babes and guns.

I don't have any schützenmedaillen yet, but some of them are very nice. They're easier to find than the schützentaler, probably because there are simply more different types. If you want one, Rod Moore's site has a bunch for sale.

Everything I see on Rod's site that I want is sold  :-[

He just listed a new batch of shooting medals, and a lot of them are very nice.

Seems to me that Rod is selling lower grade materials of these medals on his site. I would aim for AU-UNC grades which are still affordable in spite of lower mintage.

A lot of the medals that he calls XF look more like AU. The Albisgütli medal he had for sale that he called VF+ was one that I would have considered, had it not been sold. I'm not a medal collector, though, so I could certainly be wrong.
