Title: 1795 Bamberg Taler
Post by: regandon on December 20, 2010, 08:05:32 PM
This is a one year issue. It is known as a contribution Taler. The silver was given by the Bishop for the minting of coinage.

 Bishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal (1779-1795)

Obv: Bishopric insignias coat of arms
Rev: Date and legend within ornamented decoration

I also picked up a few Prussian 2Taler pieces also. I will get pics of them and post them up if anyone would like to see them.

That's an interesting thought....where does the metal come from for various coin issues?  It's neat that there is a background on this contribution taler.  Maybe a good subject for it's own thread, but how much of the silver is pillaged and remade versus mined materials?  For talers specifically, is there any way of knowing?  I've heard that some of the Spanish reales were possibly made from South American pillaged silver taken from the local villages/tribes, which made me think of the question....

Cool taler BTW, and thanks for the thought-provoking post. :)

The story states it came from the silverware donated by Bishop himself. He must have had to eat with woodenware after giving up his silverware. I believe that the silver came from the coinage paid from the Tax money collected by the Bishop. But, when your in power, I guess you can state it came from any place.

After doing some indepth research, there is enough proof that states the Bishop did use his own silver.

Another great contribution to the gallery 'regandon'. The detailing for these coins are always eye catching. Can't wait to see your Prussian coins too.  :ThumbsUp;
