I'm surprised to see this is the Second Federal shooting contest. As Germany was not a unified 'Federal" country till 1871. Really am curious as to why the term Bundes was being used prior to that.

  The term 'Bundes' is most likely a reference to the North German Confederation,which Bremen was a member state of.

Bremen became a member of the North German Confederation in the late 1860's. It had Imperial Free City status from 1646 until it was taken away 1803. From 1806 until 1813 it was controlled by France. It did not regain its independence until 1815.
