2 rare Luxembourg 20 Fr.

These are 2 very rare Luxembourg essai I've heard about and have been looking for them for quite a few years. My time waiting has paid off. 

One is a very rare essai struck in silver instead of gold. The other is struck in copper-nickel. I was very lucky to win both types. These coins are not listed in Krause or Wictor. They were officially minted in gold.

Anyone that I've talked with states these come up at auctions very rarely. As for known mintages, I believe somewhere around 20 to 50 pieces. But, that's just a guess. I know the ones that specialize in essai, have a hard time finding published mintage records on these two pieces. I would believe the one minted in silver would have a lower mintage. I'm just glad to have found both the silver and the copper-nickel ones in one auction.

Its been very hard to find any mintage records on them. There are published mintages on the gold ones. But, then again, they are only known in gold. I know of only one other silver one that came up for auction a few months back. It came back up for auction, and now I own it. As for the copper-nickel one,..this is the only one I've seen in over two years. I do believe there are other ones out there, but I've only seen one come up at auction.

  These ARE listed in Krause - 'Unusual World Coins',that is.

You need to have this catalogue,despite all the junk that is listed in there that shouldn't be listed at all.

The only versions in that cat are the standard versions and the gold essais, The silver and copper-nickel essais are not in the cat. I have. I have all the Krause cats.

Thanks Bill. Yes the copper-nickel does have rotated dies.
