This coin is from the historical town of Salzburg.
Salzburg was founded in the 8th century AD. It is a town on the Austro-Bavarian frontier. Its beginings grew around a monastery, and was given the rank of an Archbishporic in 798. It was secularized in 1803, and given to an archduke of Austria in the same year. It also became annexed to Austria in 1803. A few years later, it was passed on to Bavaria, and given back to Austria in 1813, and becoming a part of the crownland in 1849. In 1918 Salzburg became a part of the Austrian Republic.
On the obverse of the coin is St. Rupert and Virgil. The reverse has the Salzburg coat of arms. The ruler of Salzburg was Johann Ernst, and his reign was 1687 to 1709.

A very sweet design for a Salzburg minor coin. Excellent piece!
