New jeton
« on: January 28, 2010, 11:15:53 AM »
This one was to replace the coin that I ordered for Christmas (that didn't work out), but it took SO long to arrive!  It dates around 1845-1860.  I'll be working on getting a better pic, the angle just isn't working for me.

Here's another pic, with a bit more light-

Great ship design, like the sense of the rolling sea portrayed.

Just curious are you attracted to coins/tokens etc with a ship motif?

Thanks, the ship was what attracted me to it.  It is a common theme on a lot of jetons, I am guessing that it started as support for their Naval fleets but later (as in this case) carried over to advertising tokens.  This one is for a nautical insurance company.

I do love a nice ship though. ;D

Thanks, guys.  I really appreciate the kind words.  I spent some more time taking pictures and I think I came up with a better one (second pic at top).

This jeton is a later date than most that I have been looking at. I really liked the way the artist made the ship look to be in motion.  This is what makes numismatics fun for me, finding that special object that is 'different', and then finding an example with decent surfaces and minimal distractions.  For a while I was starting to wonder where my collection was leading me, there is really only so much you can do with U.S. coins on a budget.  I can say that with the interest in world coins/history that I've aquired from reading the forums and looking at everyone's coins, I have a much more steady direction and a stronger interest.  Thanks, all! :)

Ships on Coins
« Reply #6 on: January 30, 2010, 12:52:22 AM »
I like ships on coins, tokens or jetons, and medals.

I have a few Civil War Tokens and Conder Tokens featuring ships.

Your images are nice and I like the way the toning is brought out in the second set and that set seems more three-dimensional, conveying depth, but both sets are nice.  : )
I have collected U.S coins for many years, and then Civil War Tokens, but am now actively building a collection of Conder Tokens,
the coins that made the Industrial Revolution a whopping success. : )
