1746 Free City of Hall 1/2Taler
« on: March 10, 2011, 11:58:26 AM »
This ½ Taler comes from the Imperial Free City of Hall, which was granted the rights to mint its own coinage in the later half of the 14th century. All coinage from Hall is highly sought after. All Half Talers and Talers from the 18th century were minted in very low numbers. The coin shown here has a mintage of 700 pieces, and is graded PCGS AU55. What I find interesting about this Half Taler, is that the dies used were engraved by two Nuremburg engravers. The obverse was engraved by Peter Paul Werner, and the reverse by Carl Gottieb Laufer. The marking for Peter Paul Werner can be found under the bust. The engraving mark he used was PP Werner. The marking for Carl Gottieb Laufer can be found on the reverse under the Coat of Arms. His engraving mark is CGL. These two engravers worked together on all the 1746 ½ Talers, Talers and 2 Taler coinage. They also worked together on the 1746 Ducats.

Well, the two engraving styles mesh quite nicely.

Added:  Oh, and I love the way the toning makes the design "pop".

First of all, that is a beautiful 1/2 Taler. There is way to much meat left on that one for an AU55!
In my opinion it's a AU58, but I guess it doesn't matter.
Its a really detailed coin and I love the toning, it adds to it's beauty.

I feel it has been graded to low also.

Did you enter it to your registry there? I'm wondering how many they graded?
The more I look at it the more I see it really is under graded.
At first I thought AU58 but there is very little rubs on the high spots and an
way to much detail for an AU coin. I think it's mint state.

Also, did you buy the coin raw and submit?
Or did you buy it slabbed? If it was slabbed already
maybe you should crack it and re submit?
Or at the very least leave it in the slab and submit with
a minimum grade request.

Just a thought.......it really is a nice one :)

Look it up and see how many are graded higher. If you have a registry it will give you the info.
You may be able to make a better decision then. I would check the POP's at NGC as well.

Mine is the only one graded by PCGS and none by NGC. With only a mintage of 700 pieces, there may not be many of these in the US.
