  • This coin commemorates the Battle of Leipzig. Also called by historians the Battle of the Nations. The battle took place on October 16-19 1813. It was one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s worst defeats. This battle involved over 500,000 combatants, which made it the largest battle in Europe, until the first World War. The Allies did not stop to rest after this major victory, as they kept after the retreating Napoleon. The Allies reached France early in 1814. Napoleon seeing there was no way to win, abdicated and was sent into exile (Elba) in the spring of 1814.
