Title: My other hobby
Post by: regandon on February 23, 2010, 09:59:39 PM
I do not know if I can say its a hobby as I do get paid for doing wildlife and landscape photography. Here is some of my work.

Those images are excellent. The photos of the birds reminded me of a close friend who is a wood carver. This is a gift he gave my Mom not long before she passed, but now it is mine to enjoy. It's a black-capped chickadee.

WOW Regandon  ???   :P - one can see this is a professional photography. I especially love those long exposition waterfalls and birds of course. Exceptional sharpness and colors. It's obvious that you use very capable camera and lenses. What camera/gear areyou using?

I have just bought my first DSLR camera Canon 50D - and here are some of my bird-nature shots (with my standard (t. i. - the cheapest) lens  :-[ ) - far from your quality but still...

Deagle74, Some of these photos were shot back a few years back with a Nikon D70s and Nikon D2X, D2H and the Nikon D200. I now shoot Canon only, and I shoot with a Canon 5D and Mk-III. When I shoot Nikon, I used Nikon's 24-70mmVR, 70-200mm VR, Sigma 80-400mm and 300mm, and the Nikon 400mm and 600mm. With my Canon set-up, I use the Canon 400mm-L, and the 70-200mm-L, 24-105mm-L. If you look at the EXIF info. you see will which camera was used and at what date the photo was taken. You also do very nice photography.

I have my great great grandmother's Kodak Brownie that she bought in 1915, even have the receipt and quite a few of the photographs it took.  I am still amazed that a camera from almost a hundred years ago took such good photos.  It takes some kind of 60mm film that can be bought, but of course is not cheap, but sometime I want to take some pictures with it just to see what it can still do.

BTW all of you having posted photographs above, very nice, like especially the bird subjects - those are really fascinating and hard to shoot.

My photographic skills are nowhere near as good as regandon's, but I thought I'd share this with you. This was taken in the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction. Looking east, the Grand Valley is about a 1/2 mile below in the distance. This rock formation reminds me of a pioneer family.

This shot was taken in northwest Colorado near Dinosaur National Park. I liked the way the colors formed stark boundaries against one another.

There are many nice images posted.  I suppose I like the Eastern Bluebird, the lighthouse and the trails on the mountain most of all.  : )

I spend a lot of time photographing my coins and tokens, and editing photos from the past, when professional photography was an avocation.  Although I can't get out much these days, I receive a lot of photos from a friend and I edit those I like best from those he sends along.  He visits here in Chicago occasionally.  When he was here in December, we went to Lincoln Park Zoo and we both took some nice  photos.  We met through coin collecting, but now share a passion for photography and editing as hobbies.  I helped him get started in nature photography. : )

Nice photos, Larry. Is it your son who lives on Kent Island? I'm originally from Rockville, and I must have made 1000 trips along Rte. 50 over Kent Island on my way to Ocean City. The island is noted as being the oldest settlement in Maryland, established in 1636, I believe.

Wow! These are gorgeous photos 'regandon'. You're quite the photographer. I love your nature photos. Crisp, vibrant colors and the subjects you chose are incredible. Thanks so much for sharing. The most impressive nature photo I took was with a 35mm camera almost 20 years ago when I captured a lightning strike from my bedroom window one night (don't know if I still have it). I'll try to post some images of mine if your interested? The rest of the images from other members are also great. Thanks for sharing.

This is not actually my photo, but rather one I restored. This is a photo of my mother (the woman on the right) when she was a receptionist at the Chrysler Building in New York City during World War II. As you can see time was less than kind to the original photo, so I scanned it to my hard drive, then used Photo Shop to air-brush the damaged areas. Considering this my first attempt at photo restoration, this came out pretty good. Hope you like it. I'll try to post some photos of my own, once I find ones that I like.

WOW, that must have been a lot of work.  (hail))

You're not kidding. It took several hours, split up over the course of a week. The trick was using the eye-dropper to select the shading from different sections of the photo in order to repair the damaged areas. Since the photo was gray-scale, it made it a little easier to work. Next I had to choose either air-brush, pencil or paint brush. The wider areas I used air-brush to cover the area quicker. For narrow areas, I used pencil or brush to touch up the area without making a mess. It was trial and error. Finally, you see the end result. It was time consuming, but rewarding. In any case, I'm glad you liked it. Thanks

Here's a photo of mine that I took over 20 years ago. I took this at a horse ranch near Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. It was a funny story, I was taking photos for college project, and noticed these horses grazing on a ranch. I go up to the fence and try to take a photo of the horse feeding. All of a sudden, it notices me, and starts to walk toward me. When it gets only a few paces from me, it stops and stares at me. I quickly aim, focus and shoot. I took two or three shots and the horse doesn't move and inch. When another couple noticed this, they try to take a photo too. The horse looks at them, then turns and walks away. Anyway, I hope you like the photo.

Wow, this thread is really fun to look at.  I think everybody has done a terrific job.

Here's an image taken by my friend Mike who lives near Detroit.  It was taken yesterday and I did a bit of editing this morning.
The editing took only about 15 minutes, much less than a lot of images I've edited.

Mike is a coin collector, too.  We became friends through our mutual enjoyment of numismatography.

What is that red and white object?

Hi Larry, this is one of the aisles in the Le Corbusiers' church in Ronchamp, France (Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut, Ronchamp). What you're looking at is the windows and the light coming in at the top of the aisle which is painted red.

Here is a photo of a Chapelle from wikipedia:

Thanks for the comments, guys! I really don't know much at all about that car. I snapped this photo at a car show in my hometown last summer, and it just kind of came out perfectly. With the squirrel, it was kind of a standoff between myself and the squirrel. I was actually afraid it was going to jump on my head. I backed down from it, though I am much, much bigger :) I have been lucky enough to feed squirrels by hand, though. Maybe it was the same one?

I will look for a GTO picture for you Chris...I probably do, and if not, can probably get you one in May!

That horse photo is incredible! What a great memory of capturing it as well. I often wonder what is going on in the minds of animals.

Those red flowers in the fieild are very nice as well, that looks like the kind of photo that would be on a greeting card!

Billy, be very careful around squirrels. Not only are they known to carry rabies, but they can turn on you in a heartbeat and their bite can be very painful.

Yeah, the 66 Goat was my favorite car. I bought it brand new for $2300. In 1973, when gas prices started going up, I started driving an economy car to and from work, and my wife used it for running errands. I kept telling her that she needed to take it in for service because the carburetors needed rebuilding, but she kept putting it off. One day while she was in the grocery store, she heard over the PA system that a burgundy Pontiac was on fire in the parking lot. She got out there just in time to prevent the firemen from smashing the windows to make sure the fire hadn't spread to the passenger compartment. Fortunately, the fire was contained in the engine compartment. We had it towed back to our house, and I cleaned off the scorched hood with naval jelly and put primer on it to keep it from rusting. About two months later, I guy came to the door and asked if we were interested in selling it as is. He gave me $1000 for it, rebuilt and rewired the engine and set it up for the track where it turned low 9's. I sure do miss that car which is more than I can say for my ex-wife.

Chris
