Title: World Premier~Banknotes
Post by: Zantetsuken on October 15, 2010, 08:56:49 AM
Since there's a World Premier page for coins, I figured it was only fitting to have one for banknotes too. To launch this thread, here are a couple notes that  I picked up within the last couple of months from the BUKHARA SOVIET PEOPLES REPUBLIC. The first is 5,000 Tenge (Type 2), the second 10,000 Tenge (Type 2), both dated 1339 AH/1920 AD. These were first Soviet issued notes for Bukhara, and was the only Soviet controlled territory that didn't use the Ruble system (initially).  Both issues were printed with engraved woodblocks, and used patterns almost identical to notes issued for the EMIRATE OF BUKHARA, except having a different date, treasury seals, and local emblem. The 5,000 Tenge has a crude hammer and sickle rendered on the reverse side, where as the 10,000 Tenge has a scythe and cotton sprig.

Thanks Stefanie, I'm glad you like them. I actually launched this thread a few months ago, but unfortunately this was one of the ones that got purged. So I submitted it again and hopefully it'll be here to stay. Best of luck.

Hey Aidan. Long time no talk. I'm glad you like the thread and the items I added to it. Here's another one I picked up within the last 3 months. This is 50,000 Ruble from the FEDERATIVE SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS OF TRANSCAUCASIA  dated 1923. The federation was created in March 1922, after all three republics Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan came under Soviet order. This lasted until 1936, when Josef Stalin ordered the federation dissolved due to ethnic tensions building in the region. Each of the  three republics gained full status as Soviet republics in the U.S.S.R. in December 1936.

Here's one that arrived in the mail today. This is 10,000 Ruble from the BUKHARA SOVIET PEOPLES REPUBLIC dated 1340 AH/1922 AD. This is an error note since it's missing the treasury stamps on the reverse side. One of the last issues to be printed with wood blocks.

Here's my latest banknote addition. This is 50 Ruble from CENTRAL SIBERIA dated 1918. This was issued under Chairman: Vasily V. Yakovlev of the Government of Central Siberia.  Yakovlev was the last jailer of the Romanov family in Tobolsk. After he handed the royal family to their executioners in Yekaterinburg, he defected to the White regiment and set up a government around September 1918.

Here's my latest addition. This is 3,000 Tenge from the BUKHARA SOVIET PEOPLES REPUBLIC dated 1338 AH/1920 AD. Printed with engraved woodblocks. Also, this note appears to have a slight discrepancy with the Islamic date. It says '1337' instead '1338' AH.

Here's one that arrived today. This 250 Ruble from the TURKESTAN REGIONAL SOVIET dated 1919. This is an upgrade of a previous note that I posted earlier.

Very nice notes Zantetsuken. I love the ones that are printed with engraved woodblocks.
They have a certain quality about them that makes a person really like them :)

Thanks Stef. I love the notes printed from wood blocks too. The detailing is beautiful and so are the colors. This one, so far, has the most dazzling colors of all. I'm proud of the results, because the image came out almost true to the original colors and detail. I like the 250 Ruble note for the blue-green color. Also, I think the torches on the obverse look really cool. Certainly a unique feature on paper money.  ;D

Those are some very bold colors on the 3,000 tenge.   I don't think I've seen anything like it. :ThumbsUp;

Thanks 'FilthyBroke', I'm glad you like it. This is one of the most colorful notes in my collection. Forunately, I was able to capture the color tones pretty accurately. The Tenga issues for Soviet Bukhara are much rarer than the Ruble issues. If you have any banknotes, feel free to share.

I have a couple of cheap WWII era notes, maybe I'll get some pics of them and post.  Nothing noteworthy, but I started a WWII collection as something to look for at the local shows and couldn't help but pick up a few notes the other week to add to this budding collection.  All circulated examples, but that was what appealed to me about the WWII era stuff.

Cool. I'd love to see them. I use the CanoScan LiDe 70 flatbed scanner, to capture the images of my paper money. It does a fairly good job of maintaining the integrity of the colors. It sucks however, when scanning coins, or anything with depth.

Ok, snapped a few pics of my WWII notes.  I'd try the scanner on them, but it's in two pieces right now. :D

I wanted to find a collecting theme that I could work on cheaply and that I could easily find at local shows.  That way, I don't come home form the shows empty-handed again.  I decided to follow a WWII theme of circulated coins and notes, starting with the main players - Germany, France, England, U.S, Japan, you get the idea.... I am just making this a "fun" set, no pressure of competition or high quality.  Just some coins and notes that have seen some public use during the war.

These aren't much to look at, but only set me back about ten bucks for all three.

Cool notes 'FilthyBroke', thanks for sharing. I love the image of the Brandenburg Gate on the reverse of the German note. The Brandenburg Gate certainly is interesting and remarkable landmark. It survived two world wars, the cold war and God only knows what else. The Japanese notes are nice with their landscape and floral images. The allied issued notes for Europe were kind of plain looking, but interesting in it's own way. Sadly, U.S. notes sorely lack color and imagination. That's why I buy foreign (coins and notes). More variety, longer histories, and better designs. If you get any more, please, feel free to share.

I think they each have their own charm, and I can't wait 'til I can get back out and look at some more of them.

You're right about the u.s. notes being bland, I remember the first time I saw one of the new designs with the new color variations, I thought it was stained or something...really ugly.  It really makes you appreciate the artistic effort that went into older coins and notes.

I'm probably going to make the long drive to the Raleigh show next weekend, hopefully I can find something to add to this budding set.

Here's my latest aquisition. This is 1,000,000,000 Ruble from the TRANSCAUCASIAN SOVIET FEDERATED SOCIALIST REPUBLIC dated 1924. This was hyper-inflation money issued due to the economy being ravished from the Russian Civil War.

Beautiful note, Daniel!  I have to get me one of those.:)

Aidan, it's interesting that they would use the space shuttle on an Irish note.  Any ideas as to why?

Thanks 'FilthyBroke'. You find these pop up occasionally on Ebay. They are rather scarce though. The highest denomination is 10,000,000,000 Ruble which are very rare and command a much higher price. This one is an upgrade to one that I already have in my collection, which is barely passable as far as being collectible.

It is rather curious why the space shuttle is on a note from Northern Ireland. Interesting specimen for this reason alone.

Daniel & FilthyBroke,
I have no idea why the Space Shuttle was chosen to be depicted on the only British polymer plastic note.

Check out these 5 notes;

Bahamas N.D. 3 Dollars.

Bermuda 2000 2 Dollars.

Bermuda 2000 5 Dollars.

Rhodesia 1979 10 Dollars.

Tonga 1979 1/2 Pa'anga (50 Seniti).

Please let me know what you think.

Daniel,
Bermuda's notes are very tough to find over here in New Zealand.

I haven't found anyone with the latest issue notes from Bermuda - or from the countries in the West Indies.

There's a few British Commonwealth West Indies commemorative notes that elude me - Bahamas 1992 1 Dollar & the Cayman Islands 2003 1 Dollar, being among them.
