  • After 300 years under French rule, the Canton of Geneva returned to the Swiss Confederation in 1814. This medal was struck in 1864 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of that reunion. If you look at a map of the French-Swiss border, you will see that Geneva is surrounded almost in it's entirety by France. To this day, if you ever visit Geneva, you will find that the principle language is French.

This medal was produced in copper and is 47mm. Though my photos don't do it justice, in hand, it has the most wonderful irridescent blue highlighting the high points of all of the devices. I found this at FUN in 2006, and I later discovered that it was also produced in gilt. One day while browsing eBay about two years ago, I came across her "sister". Though she is not in nearly as good condition, I just had to have her so they could be reunited.
