The Buffalo Nickel 1913-1938
« on: March 01, 2011, 06:28:18 PM »
We need a thread to show these beautiful coins. While I find this series next to impossible for me to grade, I love this design. This was one of the last few truly beautiful coin designs before we went to the low profile, spaghetti haired slop of today. I do not have many pics of this design so please add any coins you would like to this thread for us all to see and enjoy. These threads show us coins that real collectors like ourselves collect. I'll start it off with a Type one 1913 Buff. This Type features the buffalo standing on a mound with the words FIVE CENTS left unprotected from wear. In fact, this would be the first area of the reverse to wear down in circulation so during the first year of issue he reverse was modified to the Type two reverse which adds a raised line in place of the mound under the Buffalo and puts the words FIVE CENTS under the relief of the line resulting in a much better design that would help the coins denomination from prematurely wearing down.
This one is in an old PCGS 66 rattler slab.

Some coins are just plain "interesting"
