They are mostly made of silver medallions issued by the Heraldic Art Co. I'm not aware of any other metal, but it may be possible
Most are common, but a few are rare.
They get the name so called half dollars for the obvious reason they are the size of a half dollar.
There is a book coming, but as of yet I haven't heard that its out yet.

I used to have a set but sold it and I don't have the images any longer.
Here is some that sold at Heritage Auctions a few years back  http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=427&Lot_No=82388 (http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=427&Lot_No=82388)

I did keep one though

Thanks for the information. I picked these up at auction and wondered how many more were out there. Housed in a Wayte Raymond page I thought they were very cool.

That's the one I used to have, they are really neat.
As far as how many are out there, I am not sure, I don't think they are rare......but keep them in the
Wayte Raymond holder!

People like them better that way and pay a premium.
I think when I sold mine 2 years ago I sold it for around $200

Nice pick up :Beatingheart;
