The Morgan Dollar 1878-1904 and 1921
« on: March 04, 2011, 08:22:45 PM »
While I am not a Morgan guy,  I would guess that most US coin collectors have at least a few of these iconic pieces in their collections.
I believe this is, and almost always has been the number one collected US coin. These are the coins associated with the term "cartwheels" due to that beautiful cartwheel like effect caused by a big ol' hunk of lustrous silver.
These coins are seen in brilliant, toned, and prooflike conditions with some showing monstrous mirrored fields and some true black and white cameos. Even their toning can vary from wild rainbows to unbelievable pastels. This series ran from 1878 to 1904 then was halted due to a shortage of silver. The series was resumed in 1921after the Pittman Act in 1918 freed up some silver,  then changed to the new Peace Dollars later in the year.
Stef has some gorgeous examples that I would love to see her post.
Let me kick this off with a nice clean raw example.

Some coins are just plain "interesting"
